Steven Mackey

December 12, 1953 — December 25, 2025

Steven Patrick Mackey passed away peacefully at his home in Lake Katrine on December 25, 2025. He was born on December 12, 1953 to Robert and Elaine Mackey in Chicago, Illinois. Steve was a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and worked in many fine restaurants throughout the Hudson Valley over the course of his career.

Steve enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 17 and was posted in Germany for most of his time in the service. Upon his return to the US, Steve lived for many years in Austin, Texas, where he enjoyed the music culture of the city in the 1970's.

Steve is survived by his partner, Marsha Weiss, of Lake Katrine, NY and by his brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Connie Mackey of Oklahoma, his sister-in-law Toni Mackey of Marble Falls, Texas as well as a niece and several nephews. He is also survived by his partner's children, Melissa Weiss and Joanna DiMarco, and his precious granddaughters, Sophie and Diem. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Patrick Mackey.

After retiring from cooking, Steve took up residential house painting, always gifting the homeowners a beautiful bird house to commemorate his work. In his later years, he became a world traveler with his partner, enjoying adventures in Ireland, the Netherlands, Ecuador, Spain, Portugal, Israel, New Zealand and Australia.

In November, 2025, Steve celebrated 12 years of sobriety, a hard-won achievement, which he attributed to the fellowship of the AA community in Ulster County. He found his family in the rooms and believed wholeheartedly in the power of the program and its members to help each other achieve and maintain sobriety.

A celebration of Steven's life will be held in January at a time/date/place to be announced.
