Stephen Matthew Duffy of West Haverstraw New York passed away on June 12, 2009 surrounded by his family in Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, New York. Stephen was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Jean Patricia Duffy in 1994 Mr. Duffy was born in New York City on September 6, 1917 and lived a robust life as an nonagenarian. He was an active member of the Rockland community serving in many organizations including St. Peter's School, Haverstraw Little League, People to People, St. Peter's CYO, Association for the Visually Impaired. He received numerous awards and recognitions for his volunteer service to the local community. Mr. Duffy was a veteran of WWII serving in the Army Medic Corps. in the Pacific theater. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. He married Jean Patricia Cassidy on January 31, 1945 while still on active duty. Duffy worked as a Letter Carrier in Branch 36 at Times Square Station in New York and retired after 35 years of service. Duffy and his family resided on the West side of Manhattan until moving to West Haverstraw in 1967. Stephen Duffy is survived by his six children, Loraine Duffy Strombeck and her husband Paul of Kingston, New York, Stephen Francis Duffy of Hobart, New York, James Joseph Duffy and his wife Maryann of Albuquerque, New Mexico, John Thomas Duffy and his wife Tina of Valley Cottage, New York, Peter Matthew Duffy of West Haverstraw and Mary Louise Duffy and her husband Michael Feher of Upper Grandview, New York Six Grandchildren and Three Great Grandchildren, one brother James Duffy of Florida. Another brother Edward Duffy is deceased. Friends may call at T.J. McGowan Sons Funeral Home, Garnerville, NY Sunday June 14 and Monday June 15 from 2:00 to 4:00PM and from 7:00 to 9:00PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00AM Tuesday June 16 from St. Peter's Church, Haverstraw NY, Rev. Thomas Madden presiding. Internment will be at St. Peters cemetery Haverstraw. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to St. Peter's School, Haverstraw, New York or The Postal Employees Relief Fund which provides financial assistance for postal employees who are victims of natural disasters and fires, PO Box 34500, Washington, DC 434500.
