Roy Freeman

January 10, 1928 — March 13, 2023

Roy Freeman, 95 of Woodstock NY, formerly of Kingston, died peacefully at his home with Dotty, his wife of 73 years, at his side. Roy was born in Manhattan in 1928 to Walter and Jean Friedman. He was predeceased by his parents and his beloved brothers Paul and Bob. He could not have been more loved by his daughters Rona Freeman Berkowitz, Sara Freeman and Felice Castellano and his sons-in-law Samuel Berkowitz and Harold Castellano. Roy grew up in Brooklyn, New York and he met Dotty as a teenager and married her on May 29, 1949. He graduated from Lafayette High School and the Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, Illinois. Roy was a veteran of World War II and was stationed stateside at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas as a lab technician instructor. Roy and Dotty relocated to Kingston in 1962 when he was hired at IBM. He retired in 1990. Roy had many interests throughout his long, well lived life. He traveled extensively with his wife and participated in photography, fishing, opera, hiking, canoeing, an avid nonfiction reader and a lifelong learner. He felt an obligation to volunteer throughout his life. Roy was adored by his grandchildren Eli Morales and Rachel Brown, Nathan and Sally Berkowitz, Selina Morales and Aaron Spector, Moses and Annie Berkowitz, Ariel Morales and Hannah Slipakoff, Rachel Castellano and Dennis Young, Rio Morales, Rebecca Castellano and Kamber Lucas, and Jake Castellano and Mia Quick. Roy loved and spent time with his nine great grandchildren Ruben, Lily, Rocio, Breslin, Dory, Amara, Campbell, Senen and Frances. Roy leaves numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins who he was always in contact with. Burial will be at the Montrepose Cemetery in Kingston on Friday, March 17 at 11:00. Immediately following the graveside service there will be a Shiva at the Woodstock Jewish Congregation, 1682 Glasco Turnpike. The Minyan will be at 2:30. All are welcome. Additionally, the family is receiving visitors at Dotty’s home on Saturday March 18 and Sunday March 19, 1-4.
