Robert A. Winchell, 93, of Kingston, NY and the Culinarians' Home in New Paltz, died peacefully at Kingston Hospital surrounded by his loving family on Friday September 20, 2013. He was born March 2, 1920 in Olive Bridge, NY to the late Alonzo Winchell and Ella Mae (Jones) Winchell.
He married Mary Helen (Stone) Winchell on June 22, 1946 in Austin, TX. Mary passed away on January 28, 2011. Bob was a graduate of Kingston High School, Class of 1940. After graduation he served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Upon returning to Kingston from military service, Bob was employed as a draftsman with Byrne Brothers Memorials of Kingston. In 1952 Bob and Mary began Winchell Memorials in Kingston NY and worked in the business until retirement in 2009. In addition to designing and lettering numerous monuments in Kingston and the Hudson Valley, Bob created and donated the memorial sign for the former SSG Robert Dietz US Army Reserve Center in Kingston and designed the Dietz monument in Wiltwyck Cemetery. He designed and lettered the WWI, WW II, Korean War and Vietnam War memorials at the City Hall in Kingston; the lettering and engravings for various monuments in the US Military Academy Cemetery at West Point, including the monuments to Gen. Douglas MacArthur and astronaut Edward White. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church in Kingston and the American Legion Post 150. He was an avid reader and enjoyed early American History.
Bob is survived by his children; Billie Winchell of Glen Allen, Virginia, Robert and his wife JoAnn of Stillwater, NY, Nancy and her husband Curtis Merritt Jr. of Rocky Point, NC, and Thetis and her husband Vincent Brognano of Gardiner, NY, as well as 6 grandchildren; Amanda, Kori, Robert, Kasey, Eric and Alyssa and his nieces Marilyn Lamphere Buchanan, Gloria Lamphere Brink and the late Joann Lamphere Scharschu. In addition to his wife and parents he is predeceased by his sister Marjorie Lamphere. Entrusted to the care of the Keyser Funeral Service, Inc., 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston, NY 12401. A memorial service will be held at St. James United Methodist Church on Wednesday September 25, 2013 at 11:00 AM followed by a private burial at Hurley Cemetery. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to The American Cancer Society, St. James United Methodist Church or The Culinarians' Home, New Paltz, NY.
