Nancy B. Sweeney

May 15, 1939 — January 12, 2021

Nancy Beesmer Sweeney, 81, of Kingston, New York, passed away in the early hours this Tuesday morning, January 12, 2021 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. She was born May 15, 1939 in Kingston, daughter of the late Burton B. and Pearl (Krom) Beesmer. Nancy was married to Robert Ray Sweeney, of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, they wed on March 15,1958. Robert passed away in 2000.

Nancy is survived by a daughter, Ruth Ann Sweeney-Krum, a son Robert David Sweeney, his husband, Edward L. Cattuzzo, and her beloved grandchildren, Matthew John Robins and his wife Morgan, and Rachael Pearl Sweeney, as well as many nieces and nephews. She leaves behind many friends that were considered family to her. In addition to her husband and parents she is predeceased by her siblings, Eva Finelli, Betty Brueckner, Walter Beesmer, Doris Neice, Robert Beesmer, and Nelson Beesmer.

Nancy had always played an active role in the life of her churches; she was ordained Deacon in the Reformed Church in America and was currently member of the Old Dutch Church in Kingston. Part of what she innately understood was that God could be encountered everywhere, and in everyone. Nancy enjoyed being with young people and the elderly, she made everyone she encountered feel special, she had a gracious gift that allowed her to keep her heart open and an ability to lavish her love on those most in need. Though she was shy by nature, her love was wide and welcoming. She enjoyed leisurely car ride throughout her beloved Hudson Valley Homeland, she spent many hours at various Hudson waterfront parks and was always excited to share her favorite spots with others. Neither a gambler nor a drinker she very much enjoyed community settings, at local bingo gatherings she cultivated many joyful friendships. Travelling with local senior groups throughout the Northeast was another great joy. She also could be content at home, watching birds, relaxing on the porch while having long conversations with friends and family. She pursued personal happiness by caring for others and found the rare gift of a good listening ear to be the most valuable gift she could offer. With encouragement and little judgement, she allowed people to speak their dreams and hopes, into realities. Nancy's gentle warm nature allowed people to be their authentic selves and for this she gained the love and adoration of all who knew her.
