Lois Marguerite Morehouse

Lois Marguerite Morehouse, 93, of Hurley passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her children, grandchildren, cat Scooter and granddog Jilly on December 30, 2025. She was born in Saugerties, NY, on April 20, 1932, to the late Wendell and Dora A. (Ennis) Saile.

Lois was a graduate of Saugerties High School and Moran-Spencerian School of Business. She was employed by Central Hudson. Later she worked at the Children’s Annex as a teacher’s aide where she learned sign language to help communicate with children with special needs.

She married the love of her life, Herbert F. Morehouse, on October 16, 1955. Lois and Herb enjoyed skiing with the Trail Sweepers and dancing with the Left Footers Square Dance clubs. They celebrated 69 years together before his passing in March 2025. Lois was very devoted to her family. She loved spending time with them, especially her grandchildren as well as time with her friends. Some of her favorite things to do were getting together for cookouts, having picnics at North Lake, camping in the Adirondacks, relaxing on the porch, going for car rides to see the Autumn leaf colors, and getting ice cream. Christmas was one of her favorite holidays. She festively decorated her home and enjoyed watching Frosty the Snowman. Lois enjoyed making people feel special, notably in celebrating their birthdays with personal notes, balloons, gifts, and cake. A pet lover all her life, Lois enjoyed caring for all her cats and dogs, even teaching them to respond to sign language.

Lois is survived by her children Lori Decker (John), Wendy Helsley (Steve) and Herbert Morehouse, Jr. She’s the proud grandmother of Daniella and Johnathan Helsley. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Lois is predeceased by her husband, Herbert Morehouse, Sr., her sisters Esther Mickle and Doramae Saile, brother Oliver Saile, nephews Gary and Carl Mickle and her dog Tupper.

Friends and family may pay their respects on Friday, January 9, 2026, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston, NY. A funeral service will be held at the Hurley Reformed Church, 11 Main Street, Hurley, NY, on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 11:00am with burial following at the Hurley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to either The Heart of the Catskills Humane Society, P.O. Box 88, Delhi, NY 13753 or the Hurley Fire Department, P.O. Box 181, Hurley, NY 12443.
