Lenore “Lee” Cane, 90, of Kingston, NY, passed away on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, NY. She was born on April 7, 1934 in Plattsburgh, NY and was the daughter of the late Dr. Harry Leo and Iris G. Freedman.
She graduated from Plattsburgh High School in 1952, from Syracuse University with a BA degree Cum Laude in 1956, attended Syracuse University Law School, 1956-1957, and received her MA degree from SUNY Albany in 1958. She married Len Cane in 1958.
Initially, she taught history at Dannemora High School in Dannemora, NY from 1958 to 1961. During the next 12 years, following the birth of their son, Craig, in 1961, she was a stay-at-home mom and active in various local groups in Plattsburgh and Kingston: The Plattsburgh Jayncees, eventually serving as President of the NY State Jaynceees, 1965-1966 and the Plattsburgh Human Rights Commission. Lee returned to full time employment in 1973, and for the next 27 years she was employed at the UC Department of Social Services, holding the position of Director of Temporary Assistance from 1996 to 2001, prior to retiring in 2001. She was an active member of the League of Women Voters in Ulster County for 40 years. During that time she held various board positions and served on several committees.
She is survived by her son, Craig Cane, granddaughter, Melanie Cane, and her great granddaughter, Raya Guido. Lee is preceded in death by her husband, Len Cane.
