Joseph T. Smith

Joseph T. Smith, 82, passed away after a long illness on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at home surrounded by family. He was born on December 9, 1943, in Queens, NY, son of the late Joseph and Emma Smith. Joe was married to Linda Gray-Smith since August 1968.

He was a graduate of Monsignor McClancy Memorial High School, Manhattan College where he received his bachelor’s degree in English and Queens College where he received his master’s degree in English.

He later taught at Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn and then went on to work for the United States Custom Service for 37 years.

Joe ran track in high school, was an avid Yankees fan and enjoyed reading and watching movies.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Gray-Smith, his children, Michael J. Smith and his wife Anita Serpa-Smith, and Douglas S. Smith and his wife Joanne Baker-Smith, his grandchildren, Britney, Sabrina, Norah, and Henry, his sister, Dolores Sarandos, his sisters in law, Trudy Smith, Miriam Smith, and Deborah Nuzzo, as well many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers, Thomas and Vincent Smith, and his brothers in law, Gus Sarandos and Robert Nuzzo.

The family is especially grateful to Unity Ambulette for their many years of assistance. We are also thankful and appreciative of the Dialysis Center in Kingston for all the years they took care of Joe, we will always have a special place in our hearts for them. Finally, we would like to give a very special thank you to Dhyan Singh, who started as Joe’s aide and became part of our family.

Arrangements entrusted to Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston, NY 12401, where family and friends may visit on Monday, July 13, 2026, from 4pm to 7pm. The funeral procession will form at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at 9am and will then proceed to Immaculate Conception RC Church, 467 Delaware Ave., Kingston, NY 12401 where at 10am a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will follow in Mount Marion Cemetery, Mount Marion, NY.
