James T. Shields passed away on February 22, 2026 at the age of 84. He was born in Rome, NY. He married his beloved wife, Meredithe, in 1977, beginning a lifelong partnership grounded in love and devotion.
The oldest of his siblings, James grew up helping tend his family’s farm in upstate New York. After graduating from high school, he moved to New York City to attend NYU, where he pursued his path toward becoming an oral surgeon. After graduation, he and his wife moved to Kingston, where he built a long and respected career in oral surgery spanning 32 years. He was deeply dedicated to his profession and took great pride in serving his patients. His work was more than a career — it was a calling.
He was not one for taking extended time off and found fulfillment in his work and in the relationships he built throughout his life. When he did step away, he enjoyed visits to the beach. In his youth, he loved riding horses, and that appreciation for horses remained with him throughout his life.
He had a lifelong love of exercise and learning. As a young man, he played football, and later in life could often be found working out at the local YMCA. An avid reader, he especially enjoyed nonfiction.
Music also brought him joy — he began taking guitar lessons at the age of 80, a reflection of his curiosity and determination to keep growing.
Above all, he was devoted to his friends and family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Meredithe, his children, James Shields and Christine Kelly, her spouse Chris, a grandchild, Amelia, and his siblings, Dick, Ann and Mary, as well as many extended family members and friends.
