G. Ernest Smith

G. Ernest Smith, 74, of the Town of Kingston, died peacefully Monday afternoon, January 30, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 30, 1937 in Kingston, the son of the late Harold V. and Carrie M. Carlson Smith.

Ernie was the husband of Mary Lou Woods Smith, they wed on October 13, 1956.

Ernie had attended Kingston High School and was a graduate of Ulster County Community College; he had been employed by IBM for almost 38 years, retiring in 1992.

Ernie was a Town Councilman in the Town of Kingston and was also the Town of Kingston Historian. For many years he also owned and operated S & C Catering and a bicycle repair shop. He was a devoted and long time member of the Town of Ulster Kiwanis Club for over 39 years, having served as president of the club. He was currently serving as the club secretary. In addition he had served as Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor for the Hudson River Division.


In addition to his wife he is survived by his children Raymond E. Smith of Stone Ridge, Janice L. Trahan and her husband Dennis of Louisburg, NC, Vincent J. Smith of Esopus, Sharon K. Conlin and her husband Michael of Lake Katrine, and Terri A. Schnell and her husband Jim of Saugerties, and a brother John J. Smith of Hyde Park. Eight grandchildren, a great grandson, several nieces and nephews.


Entrusted to the care of Eric Keyser, Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston. The family will receive their friends on Thursday from 3 - 8 pm. The procession will form on Friday at 10 a.m. A Service of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 22 Livingston Street, Kingston on Friday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Richard Mueller, officiating.
