Dr. Claude Schleuderer

March 25, 1948 — July 26, 2023

Dr. Claude Schleuderer, 75, of Kingston, NY, passed away at home on July 26, 2023. Claude was born on March 25, 1948 in Paris, France to his refugee parents Alexander Schleuderer of Teshn, Czechoslovakia and Zizi (Ozeshkanazi) Schleuderer of Istanbul, Turkey. In 1956, at the age of 8, they immigrated to the United States and he did not speak a word of English. He spent the rest of his childhood in Stamford, Ct. Claude met Maryalice Dunckley in Saranac Lake, NY in 1976 and they wed on April 16, 1978 on Long Island, NY. They eventually moved to Kingston in 1988.

He received his BA in Psychology from the University of Hartford, his MS in Counseling from Syracuse University, and his PhD in Psychology from the University of Georgia. He worked as a Licensed Psychologist for Ulster County Mental Health Children’s Unit for many years while also maintaining a private practice.

He was a current member of Congregation Emanuel of the Hudson Valley and Temple Israel of Catskill. Claude was a former Board Member of Ahavath Israel in Kingston. He was a life member of the American Psychological Association, who had him travel the US and Canada as an Internship Site Visit Team Chair. He mentored many Interns in Psychology during his time at UCMH. He received awards for spearheading innovative programming aimed at protecting children of Ulster County. He was past President of the NY State Psychological Association Forensic Division as well as the Public Sector Division. Claude loved to travel, frequently returning to his favorite city, Paris. He also loved all things Disney, another favorite destination. Skiing was a passion, often at Whiteface in Lake Placid and each year since moving to the Hudson Valley he held a season pass to Belleayre until COVID and for as long as his health allowed. His children were sometimes pulled from school when young for trips to Disney, DC, Boston or simply because of prime weather conditions on the ski hill. Claude’s philosophy was that schools should not interfere with his children’s education. He also often stated “I am the luckiest son-of-a-b**** I know”, after having lost his father when only 9 years old and raised by his fiercely determined widowed mother, achieving the American Dream of starting with very little and managing to build a better life for his family while contributing to his community.

Claude was predeceased by his parents and step father, Sydney Lebow. He is survived by his loving wife, Maryalice Schleuderer of Kingston, his much adored children who he was immensely proud of; his son, Anthony Schleuderer (Chelsy) of Kingston, daughter, Alexandra Schleuderer (and partner Shokhrukh Abdurakhimov) of Kingston, his cherished grandchildren, Giuliana and Jaidyn and their mother Stephanie Spader Schleuderer, a bonus granddaughter, Bella, his best friend Howard Gottlieb (and Bev), his much loved mutts past and present as well as in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Arrangements entrusted to Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, Kingston, NY. The funeral service will be held at Congregation Emanuel of the Hudson Valley, 243 Albany Ave., Kingston, NY 12401 on Wednesday July, 27th 2023 at 11am. Burial will follow in Montrepose Cemetery, Kingston.
