Bernice "Becky" Hobbs

Bernice (born Becky Weiner) Hobbs passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026, at the age of 96. She was a resident of Ten Broeck Commons in Lake Katrine, New York, and was well-cared for by all the nurses and staff. Bernice was a gentle and kind resident who enjoyed singing, music, and reminiscing. On a sunny day, she could be found with her son Jim, looking at the trees, flowers and rabbits that abound on the grounds of the facility. She was born in 1929 in Worcester, Massachusetts, later moving to Manhattan, the Bronx, and Port Chester, New York. Bernice spent most of her career as a bookkeeper. She loved tennis, jazz and Big Band music, and singing as a member of the Holly Hill Tones, where she also played a dazzling harmonica. She loved to read, write poetry, eat chocolate and ice cream, go for brisk walks, and swim. In her younger years, she travelled around the world, visiting China, Hong Kong, and Singapore, as well as Europe and many cities in the U.S.

Becky was the daughter of Morris and Anna Weiner, both immigrants from Eastern Europe in the early 1900’s. After graduating from Worcester Junior College, she went on to study at the State University of New York in Purchase, taking courses after her retirement. Bernice was predeceased by her sisters, Sally and Lena, her brothers Jackie and Benny, her ex-husband Henry, and her mother and father. Her son Kevin died in 2002 in a tragic automobile accident. She is survived by her son Jim and his partner Carol, two grandchildren, Adrien Hobbs and his wife Rachel, Kumari Lader and her husband Josh, and one great-granddaughter, Mina.

Ten Broeck Commons provided a warm and loving home where Bernice spent her final years. Staff often commented on her contagious smile, twinkling eyes, appreciative manner, and caring heart. She is greatly missed!
