Amos Richard Newcombe

Amos Richard Newcombe, 91, of Manor Lake, Kingston, died peacefully at home Thursday evening surrounded by his loving family.

He was a graduate of Riverside Military Academy, Gainesville, Georgia, class of 1937 and the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business, class of 1941. After college he returned home to run the family business, Austin R. Newcombe and Company, until his retirement in 1981.

Mr. Newcombe was founder of the Kingston Hospital Foundation. He had served on the Kingston Hospital Board of Directors acting in various capacities, mainly focusing on financial issues of the hospital. Mr. Newcombe was directly involved in these capacities for over 30 years. He was particularly active with the major fundraising drives and capital improvements' projects. For his years of dedication, he was honored by being named Kingston Hospital Director Emeritus.

He was a longtime member of the Old Dutch Church; he had served on the church consistory, the investment committee, and on the committee that welcomed Queen Juliana of the Netherlands to Kingston.

He was the husband of the late Helen Loughran Newcombe; they wed on September 28th, 1946. Mrs. Newcombe died on March 26, 2003. With his wife, he was very instrumental in supporting the Arts, in particular the Ulster Performing Arts Center and the Hudson Valley Philharmonic.

He had been president of the Hudson Valley Oil Dealers Association and was instrumental in creating a spirit of cooperation and fairness within the industry, helping many when they were in need during oil shortages, especially in the 1970's.

He enjoyed photography, working on the family property, and spending time with and socializing with family and friends. He enjoyed keeping up with the times, always interested in new technologies and innovations.

Mr. Newcombe was born in Catskill on May 15, 1920, the son of the late Austin R. and Luella Post Newcombe, with his family they moved to Kingston when he was 4 years old.

Mr. Newcombe is survived by his loving family, daughter Lydia F. Newcombe of Kingston, son Amos Robert Newcombe of Kingston, granddaughter Isadora N. Newcombe of Kingston, nephew Geoffrey Newcombe of Vero Beach, Fl, Bruce Hilton of Millersville, MD, Pamela Abele of Troy, NY and Stephanie Walsh of Catskill, a sister in law Barbara Newcombe Weber of Catskill, several grand and great grand nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Lloyd Avery Newcombe and uncle of the late Austin R. Newcombe II.

Entrusted to the care of Eric Keyser, Keyser Funeral Service, 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston, The family will receive their friends on Monday from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 pm. The procession will form on Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. and proceed to the Old Dutch Reformed Church where at 11:00 a.m. the funeral service will be held, Rev. Kenneth L. Walsh, officiating.

Burial in Jefferson Rural Cemetery, Catskill on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m.
