Gerald Woodrow Sumber was a Podiatrist in Kingston from 1940 to 1990 when he retired from active practice. He served on the staff of the Golden Hill Infirmary; at both Kingston and Benedictine Hospitals; and cared for patients at ARC and Gateway facilities. Dr. Sumber was a founding member of the Mid Hudson Podiatry Medical Society and had served as it's president. He was a member of both New York and National Associations of Podiatrists.
Dr. Sumber attended Drew University in Madison, New Jersey and was a graduate of the N.Y. College of Podiatric Medicine. He served in the Army during World War II with the 36th Infantry Division as a combat medical soldier. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and V for valor and the Silver Service Star in lieu of 5 bronze combat stars.
Dr. Sumber was born in New York City on June 3, 1915 but was raised in Weehauken, NJ, by his parents, the late Samuel and Bella Sumber. He was a member of Kingston Lions Club, Temple Emanuel and Wiltwyck Country Club.
His wife of 66 years, Dorothy B. Sumber, predeceased him. He is survived by his sons Bruce Sumber and Dr. Jonathan Sumber and Jonathan's wife Linda. There are 4 grandchildren, Seth, Aryn, Jessica and Jennifer Sumber.
Services will be held at Temple Emanuel at 243 Albany Ave, Kingston, NY, Sunday May 9, 2010, at 10 am. Rabbi Yael Romer officiating. A procession will follow where he will be laid to rest at Montrepose Cemetery. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Shiva will be observed on Sun. Mon & Tue., 7 - 9 pm at the home of Jonathan and Linda Sumber, Fair St., Kingston.
